Skin Aging

What happens to the skin when aging occurs?

Wrinkles, age spots, warts, skintags and dryness begin to appear on the skin. The number of pigment containing melanocytes decreases and the skin appears more translucent or pale. The skin becomes thinner and loses its fat, making it less plump and smooth. This occurs due to the reduction of skin strength and elasticity known as elastosis from connective tissue, pronounced in particular to sun-exposed areas of the body. Dermal Blood vessels are fragile at this point and can lead to easier bruising, bleeding under the skin, cherry angiomas, and other conditions. The padding or extra insulation that originally was in our bodies, dissapears as the subcutaneous layer thinens throughout the years. This may lead to skin injuries , the inability to maintain body temperature and a longer period of time for any injuries to heal. Sweat glands are also affected with aging, decreasing the amount of sweat released that has a larger increment of overheating and possibly developing heartstroke. Dryness and itchy skin occurs as sebeceaous glands produce less oil to moisten skin and waterproof it.

What lifestyles and environmental factors can lead to skin aging or increase the rate of skin aging?
Sunlight, tobacco, and chemicals are environmental factors that speeds up the aging process. Lifestyles that may increase the rate of skin aging include the following: tanning, not wearing protective sunscreen SPF of 15 or higher, cigarette smoking (contributes to wrinkles), diet that doesn’t consist of nutrients and natural antioxidants, lack of exercise or physical activity, and not meeting the daily standards of water consumption.

Aging preventions, treatments and diseases
Prevention: As humans age the skin loses its elasticity and collagenous fibers, but there are different ways to prevent aging skin. Too much tanning or too much sun can age the skin so applying sunscreen daily that has a “SPF of 15 or higher" can help prevent more damage that can occur from the suns harmful rays and also from uv-radiation (Skin Cancer). Sunscreen can also lessen the amount of “actinic keratoses” that already exist (Skin Cancer). Actinic keratoses are “abnormal skin eruptions, or pre-cancers”(Skin Cancer).
Another way of preventing the skin from aging is by not smoking. As you age your skin becomes thinner and it is damaged more easily; smoking “causes wrinkles and deprives your skin of oxygen.”(Griffin). Oxygen helps the body to shape collagen, and collagen supports the skin, without support the skin will become wrinkly. Administering moisturizer or lotion daily also helps the skin to keep its flexibility and elasticity. Most moisturizers have a SPF in them which again prevents damage of the skin.

Another form of aging skin prevention is eating healthy foods and exercising. Eating foods with lots of “antioxidants help the skin to fight off free radicals that damage the skin”.(Griffin) Exercising helps keep the skin strong; which helps "prevent aging symptoms" (Griffin).
Drinking a lot of water is another way to prevent aging. Water washes the bad “toxins” that “break down the skin’s supportive fibers” which keeps the skin from becoming wrinkly early in life (Griffin).

When people become older they may become self-conscience of the wrinkles that are forming. Older people may start to use treatments to remove the wrinkles from their bodies. One type of treatment for aging skin is retinoids, which are “synthetic derivatives of vitamin A” (Skin Cancer). Retinoids can better the blemishes, and dark patches of the skin. This treatment also boosts the reproduction of “collagen and elastic fibers"; these fibers make the skin more firm and elastic, which reduces wrinkles. And less wrinkles makes the skin look younger (Skin Cancer). Another type of treatment is called "IPL (intense pulsed light)" this treatment can take place of a laser treatment which removes the top layer of your skin (Skin Cancer). IPL neither uses a laser nor removes skin. IPL uses a "small amplitude wavelength light through a crystal sapphire head." (Skin Solutions). The light enters through the top layer of skin all the way to the lowest layer of skin called the "subcutaneous layer." (Skin Solutions). This treatment provokes collagen fibers to produce quickly; which again allows the skin to become firmer and reduces wrinkles.
Chemical peels are used to lessen the amount of wrinkles of the skin. This treatment “rejuvenates the skin”(Skin Cancer). The chemicals used remove the first layers of the skin once the “skin heals” there is a new layer of skin that looks younger (Skin Cancer).
Dermabrasion “uses a small high-speed, rotating medal brush or file” this brush or file scuffs the “upper layers of skin" and smoothes out wrinkles (Skin Cancer). This treatment also rubs of “pigmentation problems”(Skin Cancer).
Botox is another treatment; this treatment has been used for “20 years” (Skin Cancer). Botox it is an “injection of botulinum toxin." (Skin Cancer). This injection “temporarily paralyzes the muscles” which smoothes out the skin and smooth skin means no wrinkles.

All people age and as they age they go through changes that occur throughout all humans. These changes usually happen with the skin and the whole body itself. The body starts to slow down including the “organs and organ systems inside of them.” (Aging) Some diseases and disorders set in as aging occurs. Some examples of these diseases and disorders would be:-Alzheimer’s disease
-Arthritis has many different kinds such as: osteoarthritis or rheumatoid.
-Corneal Abrasion
-Heart Attack
-Loss of hearing
-Menopause in women
-Stroke” (Aging)
